Pin cushion, Wiltshire Museum, Devizes

“Think of me” reads the inscription on this pin cushion, made by a soldier recovering from the First World War. It’s a poignant memento of a moment in time that points to the folklore, art and customs of the local area. The Un/common People exhibition explores what folklore means in an English context.

Kirsty Hartsiotis, Collections and Exhibitions Officer at Swindon Museums, said: "Folk - it's us, the people. People are folk. It's what we do. It might be songs we sing, the stories we tell, the things we do to celebrate. It's not commercial. It's not high culture, it's grassroots level for ourselves."
