The name of this artist remains anonymous, but the subject is clear to see. Made in a secure children’s home, the artist is putting their tag on clear display for us. What do they want us to understand or feel about tagging children? The painting is on display as part of the work of the Koestler Trust’s efforts to encourage people from the UK’s criminal justice system to engage with the arts. The exhibition No Comment features 7500 works from other incarcerated artists. The curators have suggested that a piece of art like this can ‘speak for itself’. I can’t help but feel like I need a bit of context to appreciate this artwork fully. Sometimes, when art is invited to speak for itself, I’m not sure I hear the message.
