The camaraderie of a football team is as strong today as it’s ever been. It’s often captured in a classic pose, arms folded and shoulder to shoulder with team mates. This one was captured by socially engaged photographer Marge Bradshaw who has spent time taking portraits and documenting the work of Trans & Enby football club in Merseyside. The results of her work are on display in a temporary exhibition Level Playing Field this year.
Around the same time as visiting training sessions and taking her photographic portraits, Marge was clearing the family home and found a set of handkerchiefs issued by The Rover magazine in 1931, each showing a different football team. She took the Liverpool FC and Everton FC hankies along to show to her new football friends and together they decided to stage a modern version of the team shot. Marge has recreated the image as a cyanotype on calico cotton, reinterpreting the image with reference to local heritage but also in celebration of an important and inclusive initiative.
