‘Stevenson Centerary Festival’ (1881) by Edgar G Brown, Chesterfield Museum and Art Gallery

So proud are the people of Chesterfield of George Stephenson that they held not only these celebrations outside the market hall in 1881 (marking the centenary of his birth) but also further festivities in 1948 on the centenary of his death. Stephenson wasn’t even from Chesterfield – he lived there from 1938 until his death in 1948. Strange what people commemorate.
