Irish coffee glass, Flying Boat Museum, Co Limerick, Ireland

Many cocktails have an origin myth. The ‘original’ Irish coffee has its in a museum in Foynes, on the west coast of Ireland. One night in 1943, when a flight bound for New York turned back due to bad weather, catering staff were called back and the glamorous passenger restaurant reopened. When Chef Joe Sheridan was asked to prepare something to warm the weary passengers, he was inspired to put some good Irish whiskey in their coffee.

One passenger approached the chef and thanked him for the drink, asking if he used Brazilian coffee.

Joe jokingly answered, “No, it was Irish coffee!” And the drink was born.

Naturally, the museum will today offer you the chance to make and taste your own Irish coffee as part of the visitor experience, thus marking out as one of my favourite museums that has a bar in it.
