At first sight, this seems like a drawing of the sea. But look closer and you’ll see it’s actually three pages of marks made by a typewriter, of all things. Close up, the &s, -s and %s are mixed with letters and numbers in black and red, all combining to make a bigger picture, made earlier this year.
This is one of the final items on display in The Typewriter Revolution temporary exhibition at the National Museum of Scotland. The exhibition is definitely worth a visit before it closes in April next year, charting not only the history of these machines – perhaps somewhat overlooked today – but also the social impact they had on working life, especially that of women during the mid-20th century.
