‘Daffodils ‘ by Edgar Herbert Thomas (1862–1936), Scolton Manor Museum, Pembrokeshire

Welsh daffodils to mark a happy St David’s Day. Or is it? There’s something of the melancholy about these daffodils. Rather than being painted in their perky prime, this arrangement is on the wane. One of the flowers ‘looks’ out us, while its brethren seem to whither away.

Many of Thomas’s paintings are similar in style, with dark backgrounds and moody colours. Twitter informs me he was incarcerated at the Glamorgan Asylum in 1892 for psychosis and while it’s speculative to say that this has something to do with his sombre turns at the easel, there is perhaps something there.

So a happy St David’s Day to you. But perhaps take a moment to remember those who aren’t so happy, today.
