Happy birthday Frank Auerbach, born today in 1931. Auerbach really is a prolific painter, working every day and, when making portraits, returning to just a few sitters, time and again. JYM stands for the sitter Julia Yardley Mills.

The painting is in the collection of Southampton City Art Gallery, which is also celebrating a milestone this week, with an exhibition to mark its 80th birthday. The Gallery first opened to the public on 26 April 1939 and 80 years on, guided by a rigorous collecting guidance from the National Gallery and Tate, the permanent collection holds over 5,300 works.
