Paintings of St George, St Barnabas Monastery Chapel, North Cyprus

George is not only the patron saint of England. He’s hugely venerated in the eastern orthodox church. A few years ago I came across this row of icons of St George in a little church in North Cyprus.

Until 1976 St Barnabus’ monastery (home to the mausoleum of the island’s patron saint) was also home to three monks, all brothers. The youngest, at just 79, was a prolific painter of rather mediocre icons, sold to visitors in order to fund repairs to the building. There are plenty left, it seems, although they are no longer for sale. Souvenir hunters, look elsewhere.
