Millions of American Bison (Bison bison) were hunted across North America in the 1800s to protect the developing railroads and for their skins and tongues. And their removal also persecuted the first nation Americans already living there. By the 1890s, there were fewer than 500 animals left of the original stock of more than 30 million.
This one is on open display in the museum’s Wild exhibition, open until June 2025.
