Representation of 12 Months of the Year, unknown artist, Royal Cornwall Museum

While the world tells us that the new year means we all ought to be leaping into new ventures, the image of January in this panel seems to show a tired bearded man, warming his hands by the fire. According to this wooden panel, probably from the early 1700s, the glories of good weather and the joy of outdoor pursuits are a few months off yet. So if you aren’t quite ready to leap and bound into the new year just yet, worry not and keep heating your hands by that fire.
