In 1965, portable defibrillators were brand new and, in the case of this prototype, powered by a car battery. Frank Pantridge was the person responsible, developing this kit in Belfast where he was an emergency medicine doctor who believed strongly in the rapid treatment of people who had experienced heart attacks. It was said that, for some time, the ‘best’ place in the world to have a heart attack was Belfast.
Nowadays, these machines have developed a great deal and they're in lots of public buildings. We owe something to Frank Pantridge for his pioneering work.
