Encountered at lifesize, the unrealistic nature of these aspirational bodies is impossible to ignore. This special edition scaled-up version Barbie doll has a 21-inch waist, with a waist-to-hip ratio of 0.65. Were she a living woman, her body would fall into the underweight range. She is accompanied by a fashion mannequin named Oriol, who reflects similarly unobtainable body shapes that are currently fashionable for men. Together, they are on display in The Cult of Beauty at the Wellcome Collection.
The models were made in 2009 by Adel Roostein Ltd (Germany), who have created mannequins since the 1950s.
