A Spring Song (1927) by Edith Mabel Gabriel, Ferens Art Gallery, Hull

Is this girl dancing, singing or perhaps trying to fly? Either way, her song is joyful, even if it is somewhat cautious. Taking to the stage to share a song of spring is no easy task, as the competitors at this week’s Eurovision Song Contest know – though they will certainly bring as much joy to those that watch as they will to the community they build together.

The UK came second in Eurovision last year and is hosting the contest on behalf of the winners, Ukraine, who are unable to put the event on, due to the ongoing war there. And so this week our songs of peace and joy need to be even louder, even friendlier, even more hopeful and filled with kindness.
