Sunflowers (2008) by Ismo Kajander, Ateneum Art Museum, Helsinki, Finland

Nature isn’t always presented naturalistically in art. As our relationship with nature changes, so too do the ways in which look at artworks. The Age of Nature gallery at the museum turns the focus towards humanity as part of nature. It challenges the human-centred worldview. It asks us what humanity’s role in nature is and whether we are masters of creation or part of a delicate web of interdependent species.

Kajander is a leading Finnish avant-gardist, known for their eye-catching juxtapositions of, say cats with wings on violins or flowers growing out of bowling pins. What questions does this assemblage of seemingly everyday objects ask us about our role as humans in the world of nature?

The Age of Nature is one of the newly laid out galleries at Ateneum, under the title A Question of Time.

Here's a nice touch from the museum – they’ve shown all the gallery wall texts on their website for you to read before you visit: https://ateneum.fi/en/nayttelytekstit-ajan-kysymys/
