The royal we were in Istanbul last week, visiting museums and heritage sites. And by chance, this is where the mother of the Ottoman Sultan would carry out her ablutions in private, in her own loo. The harem at the Topkapi palace complex is well worth a visit if you’re there – there’s an additional fee to pay on top of the already hefty entrance price, but it certainly gives a more intimate view of the people who once lived and worked here. There are no extra public conveniences, though.
