Made in Dhaka, Bangladesh, this rickshaw is one of two commissioned by Manchester Museum – although it’s not clear sure where the other one is. Three British Asian artists – Daya Bhati, Sahena Shabnun and Helen Abdul – decorated the vehicle under the mentorship of Bangladeshi rickshaw artists Syed Ahamed Hossan and Z.A. Saleh Zebermai. The rickshaw art was inspired by conversations about shared themes of culture, heritage and identity between South Asian communities in the UK and in South Asia.
While this is a visually attractive object, the labels don’t add much to understanding what this rickshaw means. And they don’t describe the co-curation process that has gone on behind the scenes at the Museum. The text is printed way too small and in text that’s difficult to read. I called it out in an article on Northern Soul, recently.
