Christmas card by Elizabeth Adela Forbes (1859-1291), Penlee House Gallery and Museum, Cornwall

Christmas is, for many, a time of contradictions, and I feel them very much here, in the choice of dark black and bright pink. With rosy cheeks from the cold and a clutch of festive goods being hurried along in the snow, this is in a way the personification of the hectic Christmas holidays. Yet there is joy here – the bright pink bringing a moment of colour to the darkness of winter, the shapely Christmas tree and the raised tail of the cheery dog, happily carrying its bauble.
