This wooden plaque features the Sword of Light emblem (An Claidheamh Soluis) and commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Easter 1916 Rising. In 1966, emblems like these were placed on the front of buses in Galway, on the west coast of Ireland.
Ireland has had a particularly turbulent history with its nearest neighbour, Britain. In 1913, it was part of the United Kingdom, ruled from London. The following decade saw the 1916 Easter Rising, War of Independence (1919–21) and Civil War (1922– 23), resulting in 26 of the 32 counties of Ireland becoming independent, known as the Irish Free State.
