A Book Of Ryhmes [sic] By Charlotte Brontë (1829), Brontë Parsonage Museum, West Yorkshire

Smaller than a playing card and more expensive than a mansion, this tiny manuscript offers an insight into the mind of the budding 13-year-old novelist.

Charlotte, who would go on to write Jane Eyre, gave the book the subtitle Sold By Nobody, And Printed By Herself, includes poems entitled There's Beauty in Nature and On Seeing The Ruins Of The Tower Of Babylon.

She made six of these "little books" and this was the final one believed to still be in private hands before it was sold for £973,000 earlier in 2022 – believed to be the highest ever for a female author. It’s now back on display at the Brontë Parsonage Museum in Howarth.
