Photograph of Titina, North Pole Expedition Museum, Longyearbyen, Svalbard

The first dog to visit the North Pole. Italian explorer and adventurer Umberto Nobile flew over the pole in 1926, accompanied by this fox terrier. He’d found the dog as a puppy, wandering the streets of Rome and took her with him on his travels. Quite the brave little thing, when the airship Italia crashed on the ice, she survived and lived to fly over the pole again.

The museum recounts the efforts made by pioneers from all over the world to reach the North Pole over the last 100+ years. Controversy and a general lack of information has often surrounded these expeditions and the museum seeks to communicate, in a neutral manner and as correctly as possible, an understanding of the events that took place during and after these expeditions. By showing us something as commonplace as a cute dog, they also allow us a way into the story that we might not otherwise have expected.
