‘Palimpsest’ (2021) by Ronnie Hughes, The Mac, Belfast

What do you see when you look at this painting? There are no right or wrong answers to that question, of course. For me, it’s probably the swirling colours and shapes of the Absolutely Fabulous opening titles.

You can read a more erudite introduction to Hughes’ work on The Mac website, where they talk about “the beauty, the fragility and the violence of being” and about how his work has become “more ‘optically’ charged, colour and shape are presented as vibrational energies where the haptic qualities that a painting’s surface contains and its ability to record, hold and represent time are amplified.”

To me, this is slightly pompous text, on the way to what’s known as ‘art bollocks’. But the artwork, and the others in Hughes’ Isobar exhibition at The Mac, look absolutely fanulous and are likely to reward a visit. It’s open until 27 March 2022.
