Stephen is surrounded by the tools of his murder and the remains of his tattered robe – perhaps this is a scene that some people recognise on this Boxing Day morning, after the celebratory highs of the day before.
The first Christian martyr (allegedly) was stoned to death and is generally shown by artists either dying, often dramatically, or already dead as here. He’s remembered on St Stephen’s day (26 December) thought that’s probably not the day he was killed. Whenever it may have been, he’s a sobering reminder that the festivities of Christmas are soon forgotten.
