Very few pieces of civic street furniture in Britain survived the Second World War. Many metal poles and railings were taken away to be recycled into weapons for fighting the war. But many people didn’t realise that iron was almost unusable as a material for armaments and much of it was quietly dumped at sea. This one seems to have survived being thrown into the ocean in the name of progress.
