Three women’s suffrage periodicals (1910–17), German Historical Institute, London

There is no single story of feminism and the media. And so choosing one object from this online exhibition, a mosaic of images, proved a challenge. Forms, Voices, Networks: Feminism and the Media explores the intersections between the growth of mass media and women’s rights movements during the 20th century. It’s centred on the histories of feminisms and the media in Britain, Germany and India and draws attention to some little-known or unheard stories, making connections between activists and the media across time and space.

I was drawn to these pages in particular, a triptych of images from around the same time but from across the world. Early suffragettes are remembered for how they harnessed the power of mainstream media. But their print publications were also important campaigning tools, creating communities of writers and readers united by a common cause.

I suggest you go visit the online exhibition yourself and explore the huge range of content curator Jane Freeland from the GHIL has pulled together.
