The image of dusty butterflies, pinned onto cards in neat rows, is one that museums have spent a generation trying to get away from. So here, the museum has chosen to present the native butterflies of Kenya in the shape of a map of the country.
The Hall of Kenya at the national museum faces the challenge that many such national organisations have – bringing together the nature, culture and history of a nation in one place and celebrating the country’s unique tangible and intangible heritage. Display techniques like this can bring together elements from different parts of the collection and relate them to one another in intriguing interpretive combinations. The use of dead insects to create a visually stimulating display might be distasteful to some, but it’s certainly effective as an eye-catching hook in the visitor experience.
