The boot, glove compartment and dashboard are all parts of modern cars that come from terms used for horse-drawn carriages. Even the word car is a shortened version of ‘carriage’.

I only found out about these words a few years ago when writing A Guide to Interpreting Horse-drawn Carriages for Staffordshire Archives and Heritage and the Arts Council. Part of the research process was a trip to the collection of carriages at the Shugborough Estate in Staffordshire, but you can also see plenty of them at the National Trust Carriage Museum at Arrlington Court in Devon.
