Grotesque heads, Berwick Museum and Art Gallery

When I came across these two faces online, I wondered if they’re called ‘grotesque’ because they’ve got menacing faces. Or perhaps if it’s reference to the architectural term ‘grotesque’ for a mythical or fantastical feature – a bit like a gargoyle, but without the ability to spout water away from a building. They don’t appear that mythical. And neither do they seem that ugly or demonic. In a way, they’re actually rather charming.

I’m happy for it to remain unsolved why they’re called this. Often, interpretation can leave the visitor with more questions than answers, and I rather like that. But if you’d like to take a closer look and try to decide for yourself, they’re available to view on the Art UK website.

These two heads aren’t huge – no bigger than your computer keyboard.
