20 May is official World Bee Day. It’s the birthday of Anton Janša (1734–73), a Slovenian pioneer of modern beekeeping, but also a day when northern hemisphere bees and nature are developing fast and those in the southern hemisphere are having their delicious honey harvested at the start of autumn.
To see hundreds of honey bees in a museum, head to the Horniman’s Nature Base – a super gallery for exploring the natural world. While it might be aimed at families, I think it’s great for visitors of any age. Those honey bees aren’t stuck on museum cards, but living right there in the gallery in a see-through beehive.
