Tax discs, Oxford Bus Museum

A favourite interpretation technique of mine is the object collage. When it’s tough to choose just one object to place on display, why not put a whole load of them together? It works particularly well for small objects, like these tax discs, but also for larger items – The Ashmolean in Oxford and the National Portrait Gallery in London have great examples of this using sculptures.

An object collage makes for an attractive display, but it also allows us to show the breadth of collections and some of the subtleties of similarity and difference that would otherwise be difficult to describe in text – in this case the shifts in style and design of the British tax disc over decades at Oxford Bus Museum.
