Happy birthday to JMW Turner (born 23 April 1775). The artist spent time at Petworth House, West Sussex, and plenty of his paintings remain in the house today. My favourite is this picture of The Red Room, showing paintings by Van Dyck and Reynolds, made in the 1820s. In the intervening years many of the paintings were moved, but during the 2002 restoration of Petworth everything was hung back in its original place. Thanks Turner, for capturing a moment, allowing us to put everything back where it once was. I wrote a multimedia guide for the house a few years ago and loved my time there getting to know the house and staff. Well worth a visit if you’re in the area.
