‘Seated Woman’ (1999-2000) by Ron Mueck, The Broad, Los Angeles

Have you even felt like this woman at the end of the year?

The label for this artwork is one of my favourites I’ve read in 2018. Part of it says “The woman could be resting, meditating, or simply exhausted. The tiny size places her in solitude, outside of reality. Simultaneously, it is precisely the figure’s improbable size that makes room for close study that may even trigger empathy.”

If I’m honest there’s a little too much art-waffle in this label, but the sentiment and the encouragement of the visitor to look closer are spot on. The sculpture is considerably smaller than life size, but it is completely full of detail and it really does invite us in to look closer. And that’s no bad thing.
