Book catalogue from 1810, The Portico Library, Manchester

There’s sometimes an expectation that everything that appears in a book is ‘correct’. But mistakes get into printed books all the time. Even in libraries. Spot the typo in the top-left corner of this catalogue of the books held in The Portico Library.

This book is on display with plenty of other material from the Portico’s archive, which has recently been catalogued for the first time. Given the book catalogues that have been compiled there over the years this is, in effect, a catalogue of catalogues – along with a load of other intriguing documents and books.

You can search the entire catalogue online. The project was supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
